Hi Fred, I'll have to add your LJ blog to my LJ friends list then! :)

New Horizon's sounds like a very challenging project. Best of luck with it. :)

Interestingly, it was that whole virtual flare up that (indirectly) lead to Bruce Baugh committing to write a supplement that tackles the issue head-on for Spirit of the Century. You can catch details about it over on my LJ (which I'm putting in the 'website' field, here).

It does indeed sound like a blog post. In fact it sounds like a blog: "Female RPG Gamers".

I guess I'm going to have to bow out of whether I'm a sexist who writes sexist games until one of my female thread co-authors weighs in with some suggestions. I'd love someone (like Mary or Mel) to write an article with some guidelines there. Sounds like a blog post...

I think I agree with you Matt. Forcing archetypes into something that is inherently non-archetypial (is that a word?) is a bad thing, definitely. Particularly if your trying to stay true to source material. I suspect there is an unintentional sexism in RPGs too... the only solution to that is more women writing and playing.

I think though there is a tendency to overlook, play down or mis-understand potentially powerful female-specific character types too, though, being a guy, I don't have any particular good examples.

I thought I'd turned off forced registration :)

I'd prefer to argue this over beer and chips in the bar at a convention. I do see a problem with sexism in RPGs, but I just don't think that forcing archetypes (into non-archetypes) really cuts it. I have enjoyed the discussion though as it highlights to me something that I, in my overt sexism, had not considered - that there might be an inherent but not deliberate sexism that the sensitive might find offensive in some way.

So, what do us male-centric (cos we're male, not because we try to offend) game designers need to do to make games more attractive to women?
